The origin goes back to the Asuka Era. In 607A.D., a Japanese delegations was sent to China. The Chinese emperor of that time sent to the Japanese a number of boxes of gifts with ornamental red and white wrapping made of hemp. The Japanese emperor, upon seeing the boxes, was especially enchanted by the beautiful thread wrapping which had never been seen before in Japan. The emperor then ordered production of their thread and artwork to begin in Japan. From then, the Japanese art of Mizuhiki making ornaments from special threads begin.
There is two opinion about the origin.
Why called "Mizuhiki"…
There are many stories of the origin of the name "Mizuhiki". Actually, it is named by the process of the handcraft. In Japanese "Mizu" means water and "Hiki" means put it on in Japanese. Put water glue on a paper and twisted the paper. Finished Mizuhiki is with bright color and different material.

Material for Mizuhiki is papers. It is rich in length variation. These Mizuhiki are made with 90 cm of material and can be composed of as many as 200 colors, with knots, bends, twists, and stitching to produce wonderfully exquisite craftworks and can be perfect at a present to give or receive.

Every New Year Japanese decorate their homes with Mizuhiki ornaments.


According to traditional Japanese marriage customs, the parents of the groom-to-be must send a betrothal consisting of a set of YUINO, a sum of money and other gifts. The set of YUINO must at least include a plum blossom tree, a pine tree and bamboo.
